Is It a Good Idea to Start All Over Again?

Is It a Good Idea to Start All Over Again?

Yung Beef, La Zowi, Mark Luva, Marvin Cruz Empezar de Cero (2019)

What a sensation it was when Bennifer became a thing again in 2021! Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez had been a couple in the early days of the new millennium. The actor and the singer had even been engaged. But after 18 months of romance between 2002 and 2004, which was widely covered by the media, they split up. In the years to come, they dated other people, got married, had children…

Apparently Affleck and Lopez remained friends through it all—and in 2021 rekindled their romantic relationship. They even got married this time around! What happened between the two superstars (and is still happening—there appears to be trouble once again) is that they are in a relationship scientists have labeled cyclical or on-again/off-again (or on-off for short).

The phenomenon is widespread: Some research suggests that 40 to 50% of people reunite with former lovers. Although there are some positive effects—fulfilling a longing for familiarity or companionship, for example—such relationships simply are not the same anymore. According to this study, on-off partners are less likely to talk about positive experiences and more likely to disclose things they don’t like about their relationship than folks who never broke up in the first place.

So if you are an on-off kinda person, you might want to stop reading here.

… because today’s song—a bittersweet duet between Spanish trap/reggaeton singers Yung Beef and La Zowi—is a plea for what Bennifer did in 2021: “Starting from scratch,” or, in Spanish, “Empezar de Cero”.
