With “99 Luftballons” (translated as “99 Red Balloons” in its English version), Gabriele Susanne Kerner, widely known as Nena, and her eponymous band created an iconic masterpiece. Released in 1983, the song expresses anti-war sentiments through the metaphor of balloons inadvertently triggering a military conflict. It topped charts worldwide and remains a lasting emblem of German and international pop culture, often celebrated as a quintessential symbol of 1980s music.
Having such a massive hit as “99 Luftballons” might lead some to label Nena a one-hit wonder. However, that assumption couldn’t be further from the truth. Nena's self-titled debut album, Nena, was a commercial success, firmly establishing the band’s place in the Neue Deutsche Welle movement. Beyond her work with the band, Nena herself has enjoyed a long and dynamic career as a solo musician, actress and author.
Notably, Nena has also earned recognition as a prolific collaborator. From working with Ronan Keating and the Kaulitz brothers’ Tokio Hotel to teaming up with German rapper Samy Deluxe, she has continually showcased her artistic versatility. A standout example is her collaboration with German techno producer Westbam. Their track “Oldschool, Baby - Piano Mix” is a hidden gem and a true club anthem. It’s our song of the day:
