Hot Latitudes, Cold Waves

Tropic of Cancer Stop Suffering (2015)

The Tropic of Cancer is a circle of latitude that runs parallel to the equator, a bit further up north. Actually, it is the most northerly latitude where the sun runs straight overhead. This happens at noon on summer solstice when the northern hemisphere is maximally tilted toward the sun. The climate at the Tropic of Cancer, which passes through the Sahara desert for example, basically is extremely hot. In contrast, the music Camella Lobo releases with her project Tropic of Cancer is often described as cold. In fact, Lobo’s sound, which is characterized by her distant voice, hazy beats and melancholic synths, has repeatedly been categorized as “cold wave.” So why Tropic of Cancer? “The name was a hasty decision,” the musician claimed in an interview. “I had to come up with something quickly before my first proper show.” She was looking at a map of Central America with her grandmother, who pointed out the Tropic of Cancer. Lobo stuck to the name and has produced a number of acclaimed records over the years—among others the sought-after EP Stop Suffering.
