Trap Named After a Spanish City Whose Dubious Shine Has Worn Off

TRIPLEGO MARBELLA (2023)

King Fahd was the longest-reigning king of Saudi Arabia. He was in power of the petrostate for 23 years—from 1982 until his death in 2005. In addition to residences in his home country, he owned a palace in Marbella, where he and his retinue used to burn through up to five million euros a day. But it wasn’t just Fahd and his entourage (which included Osama bin Laden on some occasions): Marbella once was an inside tip among the rich and powerful. Aristocrats from various places owned residencies in the Spanish coastal town. So did dubious Glencore exec Marc Rich. And Sir Sean Connery was often seen playing golf on the courts of Marbella when not being on set. While the glory days of the city on the Costa del Sol are long gone, what it once was hasn’t been forgotten. In 2023 the French afrobeat duo TRIPLEGO released a smoked-out trap song named “MARBELLA”. Although the song doesn’t talk about the city directly, it taps into the idea of being (or getting?) rich and powerful proclaiming at one point: “J'ai des euros dans les neurones” (I have euros in my neurons).
