TK How Do You Feel (2006)
What are emotions? There is no consensus on how to define them. The various definitions often include the words “complex,” “feelings” and “behavior.” If the people who dedicate their lives to the study of human behavior aren’t able to give us clarity, how, then, are we to come to a satisfactory conclusion?
Feeling good is what everyone is after anyhow. So perhaps it isn’t that complicated. Our emotions may be murky, blinding or even somewhat remote, but they allow us to empathize, to laugh and to create wonderful works of art. They are an ineffable element of our make-up, an important and intrinsic part of being human. Just like music, emotions are a beautiful, pure expression of personhood, especially when shared with others.
The customary, “how are you?”, people exchange is a pleasantry that must be answered with a succinct, “fine, thanks, and you?”, or you run the risk of oversharing and embarrassment. But what about when someone is genuinely asking how we feel? Are we able to sort through our complex inner worlds to offer an honest answer?
South African singer Tsakani Mhinga aka TK asks exactly this question in her 2006 ballad “How Do You Feel” that breaks down into a house groove. It’s an intoxicating mixture of uninhibited joy, love and a call to just let it all go. The lyrics in today’s song capture this so well, it’s a must listen for all seasons, all feelings.
