The Lion’s Song about Lions

The Lion’s Song about Lions

Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited Shumba (1981)

In Zimbabwean culture, the lion represents strength, courage and leadership, so only few have earned the title “The Lion of Zimbabwe”, among them Thomas Mapfumo.. He is a towering figure in Zimbabwean music, celebrated for pioneering chimurenga—a genre that blends traditional Shona sounds with modern instruments and socially conscious lyrics. Mapfumo did not earn his moniker only because of his popularity but also because of the political weight of his music. From his role as a vocal presence during the liberation struggle under the colonial Rhodesian regime to his outspoken criticism of liberator-turned-autocrat Robert Mugabe, Mapfumo has long used music as a tool of resistance and social commentary.

Mapfumo’s song “Shumba”, which means “lion” in Shona, is rich in both musical and political symbolism. Musically, the track is a quintessential example of chimurenga, seamlessly fusing traditional rhythms with electric guitar and bass. Politically, “Shumba” echoes the spirit of Mapfumo’s revolutionary legacy, even if it isn’t among his most overtly political compositions.
