The Blue Angel Lounge Son of the Ocean (2011)
Bad news first: As The Blue Angel Lounge disbanded after their 2014 album A Sea of Trees, listeners will have to make do with what the German wave band has already put out there. We, however, feel that their existing discography is absolutely good enough to come back to again and again: “Son of the Ocean”, with its carrying, rolling feel, is the kind of song that combined with its title evokes the sentiment that, yeah, it seems reasonable that humanity so far has only explored about 5% of the ocean waters—and that maybe, it’s also OK for us to not know everything that’s going on down there. Haha. Ha.
Not that marine discoveries aren’t fascinating; in fact, just a few months ago, a team of researchers discovered an entirely untouched coral reef near the Solomon islands (this is the good news, by the way!). They found that the reef was at least 300 years old and measured about 112 by 105 feet (about 34 by 32 meters). That means that it’s larger than a blue whale—and that it’s now officially the biggest known reef in the whole world.
The reef, consisting of mostly brown coral, with splashes of yellow and red, is as of now completely undamaged, and offers a habitat for jellyfish, anemones, crabs and many other endangered species populating the waters around the islands.
Of course, it faces the same threats as all other marine life (those of ocean pollution and climate change, for example), but the research team is also hopeful that their precious find will raise more awareness for the cause of protecting marine life around the Solomon islands.
