The Arms of Someone New My Friend (1985)
The relationship between surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala was a unique one—especially early on.
When they first met, Gala was married to French poet Paul Éluard, one of the founders of the Surrealist movement. Dalí became obsessed with her and would go to extreme lengths to seduce her. On one occasion, the eccentric artist even covered himself in a paste made of goat poop to impress her.
Eventually, Gala left her husband for Dalí, and they became an unconventional, open-marriage power couple. Over the course of their marriage, she had numerous affairs (including with her ex-husband), while Dalí found pleasure in watching her with other lovers.
Whether a relationship turns out as surreal as Gala and Salvador’s or something entirely different, the act of falling in love is a beautiful thing (most of the time). Capturing that feeling in a wonderful way is the American new-wave duo The Arms of Someone New (ohh, that name!). Their folk-tinged song "My Friend" is a heartfelt testament to meeting someone special. Listen for yourself:
