This Obscure Wave-Folk Track Turns Sci-Fi into Sound

Solid Space A Darkness in My Soul (1982)

Solid Space was a British minimal wave band, founded in 1980 by Matthew “Maf” Vosburgh and Dan Goldstein. Though active for only a short time, they left their mark on the electronic underground with their one and only album, Space Museum (1982). Cold analog synths, lo-fi drum machines and a deep love of science fiction defined their distinctly DIY sound.

The folk-y “A Darkness in My Soul” is one of their most striking tracks—and our song of the day. Dark, hypnotic and strangely compelling, it sounds like a lost transmission from a distant future. The song is based on the 1972 sci-fi novel of the same name by Dean R. Koontz, which tells the story of an artificial intelligence that creates a perfect but painfully dull world—and then reintroduces religion and war to make life meaningful again. (Or something along those lines.)
