At the Age of Eleven…

At the Age of Eleven…

Sam Gendel, Antonia Cytrynowicz A SIGN (2022)

In 2014, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its Peace Prize to Indian children rights activist Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistani female education activist Malala Yousafzai for “their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”

At the time, Yousafzai was 17 years old, and, for that matter, the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate. However, her activism dates back quite a bit further: Born to an activist father, Yousafzai started writing a blog for the BBC under her pseudonym Gul Makai about life under the Taliban's rule in Pakistan's troubled north-western Swat district at the age of only eleven.

Around that age, pre-teens start to realize that their decisions may have long-term effects. They also start developing new interests and often put more time and energy into hobbies—be it playing sports, getting involved socially or embracing a musical practice.

Los Angeles resident Antonia Cytrynowicz was eleven when her brother-in-law Sam Gendel discovered her musical talent and invited her to his studio. Gendel has made a name for himself as an adventurous saxophone player and producer in recent years. However, he is not just a gifted musician, but also has an interest in unconventional collaborations. Rather by chance, Gendel noticed his girlfriend Marcella’s sister’s talent and encouraged her to improvise with him.

The wonderful album LIVE A LITTLE was the result of Gendel and Cytrynowicz’ jam session, with the latter’s lyrics and vocal performance being the highlights of the record. The mystic “A SIGN” is our favorite among the ten songs that were released in 2022 via Psychic Hotline. It is today’s song.
