A Tender Gem by a Beyoncé Fave

Sade It's Only Love That Gets You Through (2000)

Word on the street is that one of Beyoncé’s favorite songs is Sade’s “By Your Side”. The song was the lead single of the Nigerian-born British singer’s fifth studio album Lovers Rock and charts among her most successful offerings to date. Lovers Rock was released in 2000 and in retrospect marks a quantum leap in Sade’s musical development. In contrast to her previous recordings, it was significantly less opulent in instrumentation and it didn’t feature saxophone—up to that point a key element—at all. Instead the album’s approach was minimalistic, frequently borrowing reverb and echo effects from dub music. One of the lesser known highlights on the LP is the tender closing track “It's Only Love That Gets You Through”, which only features Sade’s voice, a piano, and an ultra-warm organ.
