Why You Don’t Know What Geoluhread Is

ronja Almost There (2023)

The modern name for the color orange originates from the Sanskrit word nāraṅga, which passed through Persian (nārang) and Arabic (nāranj) before entering European languages, such as arancia in Italian and orange in French.

The term gained prominence in the 16th century, around the time the fruit of the same name became widely known in Europe. Before this, the color was referred to as geoluhread in Old English, meaning “yellow-red.”

The proverb about something being greater than the sum of its parts comes to mind here. A less clichéd expression of this idea can be found in today’s song, a wonderful piece by singer-songwriter and producer ronja.

“Almost there / transforming into one / color to colors are collapsing into one / and they melting over into sways of silver and gold / and they rushing over creating something bigger than you…,” the young German artist sings in her gentle voice, offering a beautiful metaphor for transformation and unity.
