Nala Sinephro Space 8 (2021)

With sharp analysis, humor, and an unapologetically intersectional perspective, Missy Magazine has been Germany’s go-to independent feminist publication since 2008. Across print, podcasts, online columns and social media, Missy challenges the status quo, amplifying marginalized voices to make sure feminism is never just a trend, but a stance.

Past issues have tackled topics as diverse as trans youth during the Trump administration, fat acceptance, the very real and scary shift to the right in German politics, sex work and even the representation of menstruation (blood). They’ve interviewed and profiled artists, activists and organizations fighting for safe abortions worldwide and brought fresh perspectives on queer pornography, care work and everyday life, always with a sharp, witty attitude that challenges our way of thinking.

You won’t want to miss the current Missy: As Lena Hansen, one of the editors, puts it, “it tells the stories of people who refuse to accept the status quo—from activists fighting against the abolition of asylum rights to Gen Z challenging authoritarian governments. At the center of it all is our very special cover star, Gina-Lisa Lohfink, who lends her voice to the ‘Only Yes Means Yes’ campaign. And starting on page 75, we dive into the music that’s moving us right now—and why trans activist and composer Beverly Glenn-Copeland only found recognition in his 70s.”
So, to the kiosk (or your favorite magazine shop) you go!
But before you go, the editors have shared a mini playlist of their current track crushes with us. Starting off with London-based harpist and composer Nala Sinephro and her jazz-, ambient- and synth-infused sound that feels entirely her own. Other highlights include “Jesus Freak Lighter” by Blood Orange, a song that feels like floating on a synthetic cloud, perfect for romanticizing U-Bahn rides; “Softly” by Clairo, a nostalgic anthem tied to one editor’s first queer relationship and coming out in 2019 or Doechii’s “Bloom,” with lyrics that speak directly to overthinkers everywhere.
