This Avant-R’n’B Treasure Is an Invitation to Slow Dance

Milyma Twice (2021)

People don’t really slow dance anymore. Outside of a few fleeting moments for the bride and groom and other couples at weddings, slow dancing is becoming a thing of the past. It might be that people are more prepared to be seen doing different kinds of movements in public or that they simply enjoy modes of dancing that are less intimate for other reasons. Twerking and whining pervade dancefloors around the world, and partnering up while looking deeply into someone's eyes really does seem anachronistic. Is there even room to listen to slower music in public? Perhaps publicly belting an anthemic ballad with other fans of the song is the way it has to be for now.

Even the slow songs that are popular today don’t necessarily include romantic content. In the 1990s, R’n’B could always be relied upon for a ballad or a down tempo number with romantic overtures. And if artists are the documenters of our times, it seems this moment is more about hooking up and less about everlasting love. Still, music is an intrinsic part of the human experience and we are not always up-tempo; the pace of life slows down, moods change and some stories are somber, serious or sensual, so of course we will always have music that reflects this.

Milyma’s “Twice” is a beautifully sung story. The song has a motion to it, unfolding and evolving while the artist’s voice brings light and softness. The singer, songwriter and producer takes her time to guide us through the journey. It's evocative, so refined and it’s ok: you can slow dance to it if you want to.
