Did She Scam 800,000 USD to Launch Her Career as a Rapper?

Loredana feat. Macloud Durch die Nacht (2019)

When rapper Loredana Zefi was arrested in 2019, she had already gained considerable fame throughout the German-speaking world and in Albania. The office of the district attorney had her arrested in her flat in Lucerne, Switzerland—for fraud. Zefi allegedly tricked a couple living in the Swiss alps into paying her nearly 800,000 USD. The musician masqueraded as an attorney, offering the couple help to retrieve another 250,000 USD the couple had previously paid to Zefi’s brother. The case never went before a judge as the rapper and the couple settled out of court. Considering that this happened in 2017 and early 2018, only months before Zefi released her debut single “Sonnenbrille”, and that Zefi has been accused for buying streams on DSP, the story also invites another reading: Did Zefi mastermind the scam involving this substantial amount of money to launch—and illegally boost—her career as a musician, making enough dough to pay back the victims and get away without prosecution? If so, her plan worked out just fine: Loredana, as Zefi simply calls herself as an artist, has built an impressive career with several gold- and platinum-awarded hit singles in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Despite her potentially Machiavellian behavior, we do enjoy some of Loredana’s output. One particular and somewhat overlooked highlight in her extensive discography is “Durch die Nacht” from her debut album King Lori, featuring wizard producer Macloud spitting some lines himself.
