HTRK Kiss Kiss and Rhinestones (2021)
Diamonds have a long history of giving aristocrats their literal splendor; an exclusive glamor, of course, as gemstones are a rather rare affair. It was only in the 18th century that the avid Alsatian jeweler Georg Friedrich Strass found a way to imitate diamonds and thus make glitter available to a bigger audience. To this day, the name of these imitations refer to its inventor in many languages, e.g. in German (“Strasssteine”) or in French (“pierres de strass”), while the English language names the geographical origin of the so-called simili: The rock crystals Strass would turn into faux-diamonds were mainly found in the Rhine river on the banks of which he grew up. Ever since its discovery, Rhinestones have been picked up in songs on various occasions. A recent example is the melancholic “Kiss Kiss and Rhinestones” by Australian alternative rock outfit HTRK, in which singer Jonnine Standish whispers promisingly: “I can make you glitter. I can make you feel glitter than this.”
