Fugees Fu-Gee-La - Sly & Robbie Mix (1996)
If you grew up in the 90s, you know that rap, singing and reggae definitely go together, and not just in the Rihanna and Drakey ways that are popular right now. Dancehall and reggae are an important part of modern music and in the case of the Fugees an observable influence and thread throughout their music. In 1996 the trio released their massively influential second album, The Score. It gained them global recognition, critical acclaim, a couple of Grammys and is consistently featured on those perennial “Greatest Albums of All Time” lists. To this day, it remains the best selling hip hop album by a group.
There’s a very special song on The Score, named “Fu-Gee-La”, and our selection today is a D’n’B dubbed, dancehall and simply outstanding remix of this song by the iconic hit makers and production duo, Sly & Robbie, aka Sly Dunbar and the late Robbie Shakespeare. Here they team up with the Fugees, who even contribute new verses, hooks and melodies to accompany the deeper, darker and more minimal turn the remix takes, and it’s pure excellence. Akon also makes an appearance, with a brilliant piece of melody and a hint of that now famous vocal tone. Nothing besides immaculate vibes and grooves here. Enjoy.
