What Do Drum and Bass and Mac DeMarco Have in Common?

Fredwave LA LA (2023)

There’s something about Mac DeMarco. He’s an indie rock darling but still beloved by the mainstream. DeMarco regularly breaks the fourth wall of stardom, reminding us that artists are just human beings who may have extraordinary talents and abilities. Being relatable and not an overproduced brand is a lost artform. Popular artists are hardly anonymous anymore, and yet many of them claim they hate being recognized and miss their privacy.

The highs and lows of fame are (obviously) well-documented (remember the E!True Hollywood stories?), and with the tragic ends and challenges so many of the super famous have experienced—John Lennon, Whitney, Selena, MJ, Marilyn, Gianni Versace and so many others—it doesn't seem to be all rainbows and unicorns. Kevin Hart has even compared fame to drugs, claiming that it's actually way more addictive. But it’s the price people are often very willing to pay. In the case of artists, it just makes their world smaller. They are forced out of being a regular member of society, and they stop having relatable experiences, which is what draws people to their work in the first place. It really is a vicious cycle.

Of course no one understands or cares besides other rich and famous people, so maybe it doesn’t matter. There's a song, “My House by the Water” where DeMarco gives his actual street address and offers to make whoever comes by a cup of coffee. Apparently more than 400 people showed up.

Today’s tune is “LA LA” from British producer Fredwave, who sampled Mac DeMarco’s “One More Love Song” on this simmering D’n’B-touched tune. It’s classic DeMarco to show up somewhere unexpected. “LA LA” is a refreshing and sultry love song, enjoy.
