“Why Did You Get Pulled Over?”

“Why Did You Get Pulled Over?”

FKA twigs, Pa Salieu honda (2022)

FKA twigs has a thing for motorcycles. At least that’s what the imagery of Caprisongs, the UK singer and dancer’s 2022 album, implies. In the caprivid for “papi bones”, a collab with fellow singer Shygirl, twigs dances lasciviously around a bike inside a house. And in “honda”, a track featuring rapper Pa Salieu from the same album, you can see her ride on a motorbike—without holding on—suggesting to “smoke while we glide on the M way.”

Well, you better don’t! While there is far less data on driving high than drunk, some studies have been conducted on driving under the influence of cannabis. These show that being stoned can slow your reaction time, impair judgment of distance and negatively affect coordination—which are, obviously, key when driving a motorbike or car.

Interestingly enough, some drivers who kiss the green goddess drive significantly slower than the speed limit—partly thinking it makes them safer, partly just being paranoid. There’s even a joke about the stoned slowpoke phenomenon: “Why did you get pulled over?” … “If you’re going too fast, it’s because of alcohol. If you’re going too slow, it’s because of weed.”

Anyway, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has launched a campaign to address the risks that suggests: “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different.” Probably FKA twigs tapped into this metaphor for today’s song, encouraging her fans to just be themselves and do their thing, and she didn’t really tell them to smoke and drive. … Right? 🧐
