A Global Sound from the Southern United States

A Global Sound from the Southern United States

FERB Gwunne (2024)

Trap music is the most prolific offshoot of rap music, a favorite child if you will. Trap was born in the Southern United States, where rappers started using the word “trap” to describe the ills and circumstances of drug-trafficker lifestyle. T.I’s second album Trap Muzik took the sound into the mainstream, where he, Jeezy and Gucci Mane were the pioneers and mainstays of the music. And so, a beautiful story that embodies the resonance of music began.

As it stands, there is South Korean trap, French trap, German trap and, like our song of the day, Swiss-German Trap.

Each offshoot comes with their own flavor and brings something new and special to the genre. Yet, the essence remains, and that energy keeps the sound going, spreading it around the world and giving people an opportunity to tell their own stories and giving voice to their communities. Just as rappers from the Southern US did just over two decades ago.

“Gwunne”, which is the title of today’s song, means winning, and in this mellow ditty, FERB uses tempered vocals and a minimal beat to break down the details of his victory. The picture FERB paints with his voice and flow puts you right there on the wave with him. This song is for vibing out, to live a little and get yourself in the mood for your next victory.
