A Delicious Mix of Blues, Indie and a Little Bit of Lost Love

EVV 2016 (Love) (2022)

2016 was the year Donald Trump became president elect of the US for the first time, shattering any preconceptions the world may have had about the “kind” of person who could become a president of the United States. For many terms preceding him, presidents weren’t just members of an elite class but also Ivy League educated types who had never been on a reality show. This was also the year of Brexit, so in the span of just twelve months, the status quo in the world's leading democracies was irrevocably upended, and they both became the butt of all manner of jokes. But that’s just politics: you win some, you lose some, you get trolled. Being mocked and parodied is part and parcel of being powerful and privileged.

2016 is also the year Prince, David Bowie and George Michael passed on. All of them are icons of pop music, icons of not conforming to public expectations. They stood for creative expression and freedom, and each of them in their own way has left an indelible mark on music. The beautiful thing about some vocations is that your expression is immortal and can inspire people for generations to come. And even if we disagree on politics, the appreciation of music is universal, and that is a gift of outstanding proportions.

“2016 (Love)” is such an excellent title for a song. The bass line on this song is bewitching, leading us wherever the sultry voice will have us go. EVV, a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter, melds genres in her uber cool music, expressing her authenticity and unique perspective by breaking with expectations and making a sound all her own. Does any of this sound familiar? Enjoy.
