When Drum and Bass Got a Taste of Champagne

When Drum and Bass Got a Taste of Champagne

DJ Marky, XRS, Stamina MC LK (Carolina Carol Bela) (2002)

Drum and Bass, born in early-1990s England on the back of sped-up funk breakbeats (around 160–190 BPM), experienced a sleek revival in the 2000s—shifting from rural rave halls to urban clubs and from a beer-and-ecstasy energy to a more polished, champagne-floor vibe.

With this shift, drum and bass moved away from its tough, testosterone-driven image. More melodic and smoother subgenres emerged, such as liquid funk and Brazilian drum and bass. The latter achieved its greatest commercial success with today's track “LK (Carolina Carol Bela),” also known as “It’s the Way”. Sampling Toquinho & Jorge Ben's "Carolina Carol Bela", it reached No. 17 in the UK Singles Chart.
