DJ Call Me Marry Me (2018)
The custom of exchanging rings as a token of love goes back to ancient Egypt, around 3,000 BCE. Egyptians believed that the unbroken circle of the ring symbolized eternal love and commitment. It’s often said that the tradition of wearing the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand (i.e., the ring finger) also began in Ancient Egypt. In the Middle Ages, this choice was linked to the vena amoris—the “vein of love” believed to lead directly to the heart.
While these early rings were not tied to marriage, the symbolism endured and evolved. Over time, the practice of giving and wearing rings became associated with matrimony, sealing marriages among the Romans, Christians and eventually many cultures around the world. Even though science has since disproven the existence of a literal vein of love, slipping a ring onto that same finger still carries the old message: this is forever.
Thousands of years later, the rings and circumstances may have changed, but the feeling hasn’t. A (wedding) ring still says: “I choose you.” And that joy of choosing someone is what pulses through our song of the day, “Marry Me” by South African DJ Call Me. A track that turns tradition into movement and a vow into a vibe.
