David Bowie Oh! You Pretty Things (1971)

Lukas picked up his first cheap point-and-shoot camera in Washington D.C. back in 2000 and never really put it down again. What started as photographing friends at skate spots led him into the worlds of fashion and art—early on with the cult Viennese label Wendy&Jim. Since then, he’s built a career that moves effortlessly between portraits, fashion campaigns, skateboarding and the music scene. His images have been published in Zeit Magazin, 032c, Office, Sneeze and on the walls of galleries from Los Angeles to Shanghai.

Gansterer’s photographic work carries a distinct signature: raw light, sharp timing, a bit sarcastic and a bit overdone, but always precise. Whether capturing portraits, fashion editorials or candid moments, he maintains a focus on aesthetics, dynamics and honesty.

Outside of assignments, you’ll find him walking through Vienna to drop off film rolls, skateboarding with friends or working on his own projects—that said, it’s always worth keeping up with his Instagram feed. Asked once who he still wishes he’d photographed, he didn’t hesitate: David Bowie.

So, when asked for a track for The Rest, it was not much of a surprise that Lukas picked an all-time favorite rather than a current track crush: David Bowie’s “Oh! You Pretty Things” from the album Hunky Dory. A song that, like his photography, never gets old.
