“Being Stoned Watching a Nature Documentary”

CS + Kreme Blue Joe (2024)

Melbourne-based experimental duo CS + Kreme’s latest album has an odd title, to say the least: The Butterfly Drinks the Tears of the Tortoise. Where did it come from? As Conrad Standish, who makes up the group alongside Sam Karmel, explains in an interview with Unknown Rhythms: “I think from being stoned watching a nature documentary a few years back? I filed that title away for later use, and this latest record just ended up being the perfect time for it.”

Which kind of makes sense! The eight quasi-folk tunes on the LP carry an eerie vibe, but things always seem to come full circle—sort of. A particularly fitting highlight: “Blue Joe”, which is today’s song.
