The Queen of Nordic Soul on Dancing with the Stars

The Queen of Nordic Soul on Dancing with the Stars

Coco O. Gwen (2021)

TV pickup is a phenomenon in the United Kingdom characterized by sudden spikes in the demand of electricity. This phenomenon arises when a significant portion of the population simultaneously tunes in to watch a particular television program. During commercial breaks viewers commonly utilize additional electrical appliances like kettles and other such devices at the same time, leading to synchronized increases in electricity consumption. To prevent any potential collapse of the electricity grid during these periods, network providers analyze the TV program weeks ahead of time. One of these “coordinated” TV pickups took place on Christmas 2013 during the final of “Strictly Come Dancing”—a dance contest show in which celebrities partner with professional dancers to compete in ballroom and Latin dances, among other types. The show is known outside the UK as “Dancing with the Stars” and has been exported to 60 countries, including Denmark. There, in 2019, a certain Coco Karshøj and her partner took second place in the competition. Karshøj is better known as Coco O. and one half of the alternative R'n'B duo Quadron (the other half being Robin Hannibal, also one half of Rhye). She had only returned to Copenhagen in the year prior and had been living in Los Angeles until then, where she worked with Tyler, The Creator, The Internet, Pharell Williams and Vulfpack, among others. The highlight from her previously little-noticed solo catalog is the sweet soul joint "Gwen".
