CKay IS IT YOU? (2024)

Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando tells the story of a young person during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The hero is born as a man and experiences a change of sex at the age of 30. Orlando lives on for more than 300 years without aging significantly. In 1992, Woolf’s iconic novel was turned into a film by director Sally Potter with Tilda Swinton in the main role. Three decades later, the Scottish actress returned to the character of Orlando, curating an eponymous exhibition at Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland. A key part of the exhibition were the works of Jamal Nxedlana from South Africa. Jamal is not only a sought-after artist—the works he produces with his collective CUSS Group have been exhibited at major art institutions including Kunsthall Trondheim in Norway, Moderna Museet in Sweden and Berlin Biennale in Germany—but he also is a prolific cultural entrepreneur: Among other things, he is one of the founding members of Bubblegum Club, a Johannesburg-based digital platform that gives a voice to up and coming creatives from South Africa and beyond. We couldn’t be happier about the fact that Jamal agreed to be a contributor to The Rest. His first contribution—featured today—is self-proclaimed emo-afrobeat producer CKay’s latest track “IS IT YOU?”—according to Jamal, a “love-themed song that arrived just in time for Valentine's Day.”
