Brown Dash Phants' Komthunzi Welanga (2004)
“Maqashelana skop di bolo” loosely translates to “watch each other while kicking the ball,” blending South African isiXhosa or isiZulu with township slang shaped by Afrikaans influences.
The iconic kwaito track “Phants’ Komthunzi Welanga” from Brown Dash’s sophomore album Mthandazo Wabolova references this street game—probably an improvised form of football, in this case played by children with a five-rand coin (!). Featuring fellow kwaito MC Mzekezeke, the song reflects on the struggles of life in the township, but also celebrates its joys—including the nostalgic childhood pastime.
The track is driven by a deep, signature kwaito bassline and a distinctive theremin-like synth that brings a playful, almost whimsical energy. Brown Dash and Mzekezeke’s call-and-response vocals amplify this vibe, creating a sound that is both lively and intoxicating. Check it out for yourself:
