Broadcast Come Back to Me [Demo] (2024)
Broadcast television used to be a mishmash of adverts, soapies, news and sports, peppered with actual great American television like The Sopranos, The West Wing and Seinfeld. Among many others, these shows stayed on television for years. Of course each country has its own local shows, but the Americans seem to have had the secret sauce (let’s call it globalization) to airing their shows and films all around the world.

Remember the time before thousands of middling options and no advertising? A week night on Broadcast TV meant a person had to choose from maybe five okay options, one of the CSI’s or The Wire. There is no wrong choice here, but only one of these is widely considered one of the best television shows of all time. Television shows may have not improved with streaming, but maybe they will, and we will get second seasons of some of the good ones. Or perhaps good TV left with the final season of Game of Thrones.
The future is unclear, especially as streaming services keep their viewership numbers confidential. Perhaps because no one’s watching. With so many options, including social media, it does seem like it is more difficult to focus the public’s attention on a single show at a time. So perhaps the era of juggernauts like Game of Thrones has come to a close. Keeping a balanced perspective on things seems to be key in this case.
The theme songs of our favorite TV shows are an essential part of the experience, setting the tone for what’s to come. The English alt pop outfit Broadcast has an utterly haunting song, “Come Back to Me [Demo]”. The strings and the story get under the skin like only beautiful music and an honest storyteller can. The song hasn’t been put to its best use as the soundtrack to a really great TV show, but this might just be a matter of timing.
