Can Men and Women Be Friends?

Bobby More Than Just a Friend (2013)

NYC’s Katz's Delicatessen, a kosher-style restaurant, is famous well beyond the Big Apple, partly due to its role in one of cinema’s most iconic scenes. Interestingly, the scene in question was originally added to the script during filming as a corrective adjustment. Because when When Harry Met Sally…—one of the 100 best comedies of all time according to several lists—began to focus too much on the character of Harry (Billy Crystal), Sally (Meg Ryan) needed a standout moment.

The screenwriters came up with the following: The couple sits at Katz’s, arguing about whether a man can tell if a woman is faking an orgasm. Sally claims that men can't tell the difference and to prove her point, she vividly fakes an orgasm in a crowded restaurant. In a 2023 interview, Ryan mentioned that the scene was shot repeatedly, requiring her to fake-climax for hours.

Though the fake-orgasm debate is literally the loudest one in the film, its main plot revolves around a much larger question: Can men and women be friends or does “the sex part get in the way,” as Harry claims. In fact, the statistics seem to prove Harry right because a recent meta-analysis found that 68% of adults in a romantic relationship had previously been friends.

The question is likely as old as romantic relationships themselves and has inspired a multitude of artistic responses. One such example is Bobby's soul/funk song "More Than Just a Friend". This project, which faded after just two singles, was created by Danish producer Robin Hannibal. Hannibal is celebrated for his work with Quadron, Rhye and Little Dragon, and kinda co-wrote Kendrick Lamar's "Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe" (the track samples "Tiden Flyver" by Hannibal’s band Boom Clap Bachelors).
