Belia Winnewisser So Real (2021)
“There is no explanation,” sings Belia Winnewisser about her feelings on “So Real”. Since releasing the ballad as part of her second album SODA in 2021, the Swiss DJ and artist has continued to combine electronic beats, synths and ethereal-feeling vocals as well as sound design and club music.
So far, however, she has not corrected the (small but forgivable) falsehood in the lyrics of “So Real” in any subsequent track: Feelings, even the really big ones, can be scientifically explained.
Take love, for example: Despite all the waxing poetic done on the topic over the millennia of human literature, love (while providing you with an off-the-charts hormone cocktail) is a quite straightforward survival mechanism: It helps us band together.
If you’re living in, say, the Paleolithic, you are far more likely to remain in the safe group of your co-humans if you care about them, instead of running off by yourself at the first sign of conflict. Even today, this same mechanism ensures care and safety for our offspring, for example—just imagine how easy it would be to leave your toddler mid-temper-tantrum in the freezer aisle if you didn’t love them.
This most soppy human emotion, it turns out, is necessary for our survival. And yes, you absolutely may use this startlingly dry fun fact the next time you are made fun of for caring about the timestamps when, for example, texting with a crush. Godspeed, friend.
