Bedhead More Than Ever (1998)
The indie rock subgenre known as “slowcore” or “sadcore” emerged in the late 1980s as a reaction to the harsh sounds of grunge. While the genre lacks definitive characterization, its songs are often defined by sluggish tempos, minimalist instrumentation and bleak vocals, hence the monikers.
Although the labels seem fitting in hindsight, not all musicians associated with the genre were thrilled about them. Guitarist and singer Matt Kadane, for instance, described the term “slowcore” as “an insult,” explaining: “We never saw slowness as the essence of what we were doing.”
Kadane, along with his brother Bubba and three other musicians, formed Bedhead, a band now regarded as a crucial exponent of the genre. Today’s song is their track “More Than Ever”. The song is undeniably slow and has a sad-ish vibe, but maybe it’s time to come up with a new label for it. Any suggestions?
