An Underrated Anthem from House Music’s Second Spring

Azari & III Into the Night (2011)

Revivals are a common phenomenon. Whether in religion, politics, art, media, fashion or music, we are prone to recycle elements from the past. And that’s a good thing—it helps us (re)discover overlooked ideas or preserve aspects that deserve to endure.

Around 2010, classic house music saw a resurgence, inspired by the tracks and DJ sets of Chicago legends like Larry Heard, Ron Trent and Frankie Knuckles. Soulful vocals, retro synths and classic drum machine sounds all made a comeback, with artists such as Hercules and Love Affair, Holy Ghost!, Julio Bashmore, Maya Jane Coles and Jamie xx elevating the classic sound to new spheres. While these artists either emerged from the US or the UK, Canada fostered a vibrant scene as well. Think Chromeo, Art Department, Jacques Greene and the duo-turned-quartet Azari & III, who wrote today’s song.

Azari & III’s self-titled debut album was released in 2011 and would remain their only studio album, as in 2013, the members focused on their respective solo careers. That’s a bit of a bummer… but they left us with some outstanding club anthems, with “Into the Night” standing out as one of their more underrated tracks.
