Alaska Accuse (1999)
In the northernmost regions of Alaska, such as Utqiaġvik (formerly known as Barrow), winters are notoriously frigid, with temperatures often plunging below -40°F (-40°C). So, it’s no surprise that when a South African Kwaito group was searching for a name to evoke “coolness,” they landed on—well—Alaska. (Talk about a name that’s literally too cool for school 😂)
The group Alaska, which rose to fame in the early 1990s, is celebrated for their “chilled” beats (pun intended) and smooth lyrical style. A prime example is “Accuse”, which is today’s song. The ultra hot track (sorry, had to do it again 🥶) dives into real-life issues faced by their community, shining a spotlight on the prevalence of crime and its consequences. It narrates incidents of break-ins and robberies, revealing how perpetrators often shift blame onto one another rather than taking responsibility.
Obviously, that’s not cool at all. So, stay in school, kids! 😎
